Meadowbrooke Gourds in Carlisle is embracing the coming season and inviting everyone to their Spring Open House events throughout March.
Despite all the snow I can't help but think of warmer weather and great spring fashions! Cumberland Valley is home to a surprisingly large selection of specialty and designer shops so you don't have to spend a fortune and drive very far to have an awesome springtime wardrobe.
If you live in the western part of Cumberland County check out Pin Ups on King Street in Shippensburg. This fairly new shop offers great designs from !It Jeans, Ed Hardy, Hurley and more. The also have a cool selection of shoes and accessories.

Everyone starts the New Year with big plans and even bigger goals for the year ahead. I view the following four resolutions as some of the most common and there are places all over the Cumberland Valley that can help you stick to a resolution in 2010!
1. Get into Shape - Skip the crowded gym and try something new this year to shed the holiday pounds. Learn how to rock climb at Climbnasium, take a winter hike with Kings Gap State Park or challenge yourself with cross-country skiing at Pine Grove Furnace State Park.
2. Eat Healthier - I would love to make the resolution to give up eating out all together... but that's not going to happen. HOWEVER, if your News Years Resolution includes eating healthier here is a list of great restaurants in the Cumberland Valley that offer locally grown and "green" menu options: California Cafe, Arooga's Grille House & Sports Bar, Z Pizza & Café Bruges
3. Reduce Your Stress - I think we all could use a stress free 2010, while it may not be completely possible there are a few ways to relax and reenergize this year. Pamper yourself at one of the Valley's great spas, get a much needed foot massage at Heel Your Sole or find your inner peace at the Barefoot Yoga & Wellness Studio.
It's the middle of November which means the well-organized have all their Christmas shopping done and wrapped. For everyone else, here are the upcoming Christmas shopping opportunities in the Cumberland Valley!
The Country Christmas Craft Show will be at the Trinity Fellowship Center in Walnut Bottom from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m on Nov. 14. Over 40 arts and crafts vendors will fill an old schoolhouse with all kinds of hand-crafted creations PLUS they offer a full menu of breakfast and lunch items with a sit-down area to eat in! Look for the special Christmas ornament tree, Santa for kids, baked goods from youth group, additional outside vendors (weather permitting), and more. Plenty of free parking.
Chocolate, wine, cheese and clothes... this next event has it all. At Leaf of Eve in Enola, Nov. 14-15 and again on the 21-22, enjoy samples of Turning Leaf's Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Wind & Willow's delicious cheese balls. Shop for clothing from Insight, Khangura, Funky People, Jillnova sweaters and more! Gift items from Mudpie & Chacha designs, chocolates from Ashers (checkout the 3lb turkey) and cookies from Otterbein Bakery.
Local artisans & designers have a great new place to showcase and sell their creations! A beautiful Queen Anne style Victorian shop filled with unique gifts including more than a dozen jewelry designers, candles, quilts, copper, purses, clothing, custom greeting cards and timelines embroidered linens and much, much more! All made by local artisans. Argosy has artists who can design your wedding jewelry, invitations and other special event items. Stop by and visit Argosy's owner Connie Hollenbaugh or email her at

I went to Dukes Bar & Grille last night in Wormleysburg for the first time and it was amazing! I have been to Dockside Willies a few times and kept going back because the food was so good, but I'm glad I made the decision to try out Dockside's next door neighbor.
Dukes' outside dining area is huge and we got a great table facing the river. I have heard about the Maryland Crab Pretzel appetizer so I had to try it. Not only was it delicious but it was so big. (Not your normal soft pretzel size at all) Although I did not need it, I ordered the Santé Fe Salad which was also really good and served in a homemade crispy flour tortilla bowl. I would definitely recommend Dukes to anyone that is looking for a unique atmosphere and something different.
Next I need to try Rock Bass Grill, anyone have any suggestions?

The Corn Festival has been rated the best one-day festival in Pennsylvania by the PA Festivals Association. Held rain or shine in downtown Shippensburg, voted one of the "Best Small Towns in America", from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 29th.

The downtown main streets are closed to vehicular traffic and transformed into a huge street fair for the day. Crafts, an antique car show, food booths, entertainment, and children's activities offer something for everyone. There are more than 300 crafts and antique vendors, selected by jury. Food booths feature corn in every available form. Entertainers perform all day at three sites throughout the festival and there are a variety of strolling acts and demonstrations. All events at the Festival are free, so bring the family for a day of fun.
Shippensburg just got trendier! Pin-Ups Fine Apparel recently opened their doors at 9 W. King St., in the downtown area of the college town.
Featuring designer looks for men and women, this new shop is sure to be a hit with the college crowd. Clothing brands that can be found at the store include Hippie Ink, Hurley, iT! Jeans and Ed Hardy. Besides clothing, Pin-Ups also features Bearpaw footwear, Big Buddha handbags, Apple Juice accessories and more.
Pin-Ups is open Mon. through Sat. 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Become a fan of theirs on Facebook to see all the new fashions. http://tinyurl.com/noy8dk

During the peak of summer we could all use a little outdoors time. Brave the heat and enjoy some outside events this weekend.
Thursday 7/16 - The "Veg Out" farmers market in Mechanicsburg starts and you will definitely want to stop by and pick up some local produce or stick around for the "Concert on the Corner". Seasons will be playing classic and popular music on the square at 7 p.m.
Friday 7/17 - A fun way to relax but still enjoy the nice weather is a drive-in movie. The Cumberland Drive-In Theatre in Newville will be playing Harry Potter this weekend. Fun for everyone in the family!
