A SPOTLIGHT ON THE ARTS You are cordially invited to attend rousing Broadway-style shows and big-time concerts in charming, small-town settings. The $20 million H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center at Shippensburg University opened its doors to rave reviews in 2006. Any one of the 1,500 seats in the center's state-of-the-art Grove Theatre provides an exceptional view of Tony award-winning musicals, Grammy-winning orchestras and live performances by nationally known artists such as Wynton Marsalis, the Beach Boys and Crosby and Nash. A cozier setting is found beside Conodoguinet Creek, where a 19th-century mill has been transformed into the 91-seat Oyster Mill Playhouse. Comedies and dramas are Oyster Mill's forte, while the Allenberry Resort Inn & Playhouse has gained notoriety for something else entirely. This 50-year-old venue is renowned for staging Murder Mystery Weekends that invite guests to try and figure out whodunit. Another entertainment option is the art-deco Carlisle Theatre, a wonderfully renovated 1930s movie house that recalls the Golden Age of Hollywood. Grab a balcony seat for critically acclaimed foreign and independent films and live performances.
